There were only a handful of so-called ethnic outsiders to speak of, in her small town in rural Ohio in the Seventies. You had your southern blacks and your Mexicans. The poor whites had many derogatory terms for each other but the rest would argue as if they came from some nobility, their fraction of French, Irish or German descent and as if they weren’t once immigrants themselves.
